Hello everybody. I have finally finishes the logo for the PULP ODDITIES comic anthology. I think it captures the vibe. For those of you who haven’t been following me, PULP ODDITIES is an anthology that collects unusual tales in the genres of crime, horror and science fiction.
The process itself was pretty straightforward. I already had a solid idea of what I wanted, including the eyes dotting the I’s. Like with many of my projects, I worked out the rough details on some sketch paper. I find the analog act of using pencil and paper to be quite helpful before going digital.
Once I had my ideas sketched out, I used Affinity Designer to make my logo. The “PULP” Part is simply made using Trash Cinema and Crimewave, both courtesy of Blambot. For the “Oddities” part, I made that by hand. I’ve included a process video below if you’d like to see it. You’ll notice that I am using a couple of other drip-style horror fonts as references (Upchucked and Horror Show), but ultimately, the shapes of the letters, the drips and the eyeballs all come from me using vector tools.
So now this anthology has a bad ass title logo that matches its vibe. Cover art is in process for this from the great and might R.L. Black. But what’s going on with the inside of this wild anthology? All stories are curated, edited and colored by me. But I’ve partnered with some awesome indie creators from around the globe. Here are some of the stories you can expect:
WTF Wolf - A werewolf horror comedy with some unusual twists. Written by me, art by Austin Ackert.
Revelation Stone - A sci fi comedy with retro aesthetics and sick, dark humor. Written by Bradley Isaiah, art by Luis Santamarina.
Vampire Detective from Outer Space - Exactly what it sounds like. Written by Bobby D. Lux, art by David T. Cabrera.
Ladykiller… - Good old fashioned slasher horror… and it’s romantic, kind of. Written by Drew Hanson, art by Nicolo Arcuti.
REISHI - Supernatural sci fi that postulates about the nature of humans, spirits and AI. Written by me, art by Yuki Geriawan.
Moon Lad - Retro Sci Fi that uses silver age tropes to explore trauma and existential dread. Written by me, art by R.L. Black.
Ask a Space Attorney - a Flargle Snorpledork, Space Attorney feature written by, art by Jevin Loop.
Bel Dan Pa Di Zanmi - Horror story featuring the Loogaroo, a monster from Haitian lore. Written by John O. Burke, art by Bryce Yzaguirre/BrayzArt.
The Grufts - When supernatural horror gets romantic. Written by me, art TBD
The Hardboiled Detective - Eggward Graves is a hard egg with a yolk of gold. Written by Dino Caruso, art TBD
The Appalachian Code - These ancient mountains hold dark secrets. Supernatural true crime vibes. Written by me, art TBD
In addition to these stories, there will be a plethora of pinup art, parody ads, and magazine style features, adding layers of meta commentary and worldbuilding to this already dense, diverse and unlikely publication.
